Fishing

If you decide to fish for trout in the River Ardle at the bottom of the garden, a fishing rod and tackle are available in the garden shed and Gordon is pleased to show the rudiments of fly fishing. Try your luck for a trout. At the bottom of the garden, 19 trout caught in the week is still the record. A permit is required for salmon fishing and can be obtained from Kate Fleming the local fishing tackle shop in Blairgowrie. Salmon of up to 14lb have been caught in this river during September and October.

Tayside contains many magnificent rivers large and small, tranquil and tumultuous and most of them have abundant stocks of trout and salmon. Tayside also contains many lochs, huge highland lochs like Rannoch, Tay and Ericht, smaller hill lochs such as Freuchie, Lee and Kinnardachy and of course a large amount of smaller lochs, reservoirs and still waters. Wild brown trout and grayling fishing throughout the area is particularly accessible and reasonably priced. Tayside’s Atlantic salmon fishing is amongst the best in the World. There is good coarse fishing to be found in several areas, specimen pike, perch, roach and tench and other species. Sea fishing on the Angus coast offers an interesting variety of species and a number of sea angling charter boats operate from the ancient fishing town of Arbroath for those who do not wish to experience the beautiful beaches and cliffs.

There are many trout fisheries within a short drive from Riverview Cottage, some of the most popular are Cameron Loch near St Andrews, Piper Dam near Dundee, Butterstone Loch, Monikie Reservoir, Fingask Loch, Lintrathen Loch. My best fish was a 7.5 lb rainbow from Piper Dam. A friend in the local fishing club had a 11.5 lb Rainbow from there as well.
